Empowering Future Innovators: GE Vernova, TANESCO, and University of Dar es Salaam Host STEM Event

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, December 12, 2024. In a landmark initiative to inspire the next generation of Tanzanian innovators, GE Vernova, in partnership with TANESCO and the University of Dar es Salaam, hosted an engaging STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) event. This one-day workshop brought together students, industry professionals, and educators to explore pathways for careers in the energy sector.

Held at the University of Dar es Salaam, the event aimed to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world applications in energy and engineering. Students had the opportunity to interact with leading experts from GE Vernova and TANESCO, gaining valuable insights into the energy transition, climate change solutions, and Tanzania’s expanding electricity network.

“This event is a testament to our commitment to fostering local talent to achieve Tanzania’s National Development Vision 2050,” said Renata Ndege, Deputy Managing Director of TANESCO. “By investing in STEM initiatives, we’re equipping our young professionals to drive the energy transformation that will power our nation’s future.”

Through panel discussions and interactive Q&A sessions, students learned about cutting-edge energy technologies and the essential role of STEM graduates in creating sustainable energy solutions. Experts from GE Vernova, TANESCO, and the Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation shared their career journeys, providing inspiration and guidance for aspiring engineers.

“GE Vernova is dedicated to supporting Tanzania’s energy transition with advanced technologies and expertise,” stated Oluwatoyin Abegunde, Executive Director at GE Vernova. “By collaborating with TANESCO and the University of Dar es Salaam, we aim to nurture the next generation of STEM professionals who will champion sustainability and resilience in the energy sector.”

The event emphasized the importance of academia-industry partnerships. Dr. Aviti, Senior Lecturer, Department of Electrical Engineering, College of Engineering and Technology, highlighted the value of such collaborations, stating, “This event enables our students to envision the practical applications of their education, ensuring they are well-prepared to support Tanzania’s energy ecosystem.”

For over 130 years, GE Vernova has been a cornerstone of innovation in the energy sector. With technologies contributing significantly to Tanzania’s electricity supply, including major power plants like Ubungo III and Kinyerezi, GE Vernova continues to drive sustainable energy solutions in Sub-Saharan Africa.

This STEM initiative marks a significant step forward in building a skilled workforce capable of addressing the energy challenges of tomorrow while advancing Tanzania’s broader development goals.
