TWIGA Bancorp Limited has so far dished out 2.5bn/- between March and July this year out of its credit portfolio totaling 5bn/- meant to support small and medium enterprises during the current year.

The financial institution’s Director of Business Development, Mr Solomoni Haule, made the revelation when briefing journalists after the launch of an event dedicated Village Community Banks (Vicoba) dubbed “Jijenge” over the weekend.

Mr Haule said the funds were loaned out to groups and individual entrepreneurs, noting that there has been positive response from the small and medium enterprises.

“The remaining 2.5bn/- will be dished out by the end of December this year, I urge entrepreneurs to make use of the arrangement to improve their business undertakings,” he stated.

Adding; “Twiga Bancorp being a government owned institution is committed to provide loans to improve small and medium enterprises which have faced hurdles to access funds from other financial institutions.”

He cited the bank’s branch in Bunda District, Mwanza Region, which has supported small-scale fish farmers through loans to construct fish ponds, boasting that the bank will add more funds when the 5bn/- is used up.

During the event, the bank also issued rewards to groups of entrepreneurs which have been cooperating well with the bank in which Beta Life Service emerged the overall winner in depositing funds on time.

A group of rickshaw operators at Kairuki was recognized for timely repayment of loans while Betheli was awarded for being long time beneficiary of the bank.

Formerly National Bureau De Change, Twiga Bancorp is a non-bank financial institution established in 1998 and has been able to expand its branches from Dar es Salaam to Mwanza, Dodoma and Arusha.
